ONEPlanET Project

The Culmination of Innovation: Announcing the ONEPlanET Final Event 2026

After years of international collaboration, data-driven research, and community engagement, the ONEPlanET project is reaching its final milestone. We are proud to announce our Final Event, taking place on 26–27 March 2026.

This event marks the successful completion of an ambitious journey funded by the European Commission. Our mission was clear: to empower African policymakers, researchers, and communities with the open-source tools necessary to navigate the complex interdependencies of Water, Energy, and Food (WEF) systems.

A Legacy of Tools: The ONESim Toolkit

The heart of our success lies in the development of the ONESim Toolkit. Unlike traditional models that look at resources in silos, ONESim allows users to simulate the “Nexus” effect—understanding how a decision in energy production might impact water availability for agriculture.

The toolkit has been rigorously tested and refined across three vital African river basins:

  • Inkomati-Usuthu (South Africa): Balancing industrial growth with environmental conservation.

  • Songwe River Basin (Tanzania & Malawi): Managing transboundary water resources for shared prosperity.

  • Bani River (West Africa): Enhancing agricultural resilience within the Niger Basin.

What has ONEPlanET Achieved?

As we prepare to hand over these results to the global community, we reflect on three core achievements that define our impact:

  1. Open-Source Access: We have broken down the barriers to high-level modeling. By providing free, open-source tools, we ensure that resource management is inclusive and accessible to all stakeholders, regardless of budget.

  2. Simulating the Future: By leveraging historical data, our tools allow planners to “predict” future trends. This foresight is critical for building resilience against climate change and shifting socio-economic demands.

  3. Stakeholder-Driven Design: Relevance was our priority. By integrating direct feedback from local experts in South Africa, Malawi, Tanzania, and West Africa, we ensured that the ONESim toolkit addresses real-world challenges, not just theoretical ones.

Ensuring a Sustainable Close-Out

The Final Event on 26–27 March will not just be a look back at what we’ve done, but a look forward at how these tools will continue to live on. We will share the final dissemination of results and provide a roadmap for how the ONEPlanET Knowledge Hub will continue to support sustainable planning long after the project officially closes.

Join Us for the Final Results

We invite our stakeholders, partners, and the broader development community to join us as we present the final outcomes of this transformative project. Stay tuned for registration details and the full event agenda.
