Navigating Data Challenges within the WEF Nexus: A Pathway to Sustainable Solutions

Understanding the WEF Nexus: Why Data Matters

Water, energy, and food are the cornerstones of sustainable development, yet they are deeply interconnected and often face competing demands. This interdependence—known as the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus—is crucial to addressing global sustainability challenges, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change and resource scarcity.

However, despite its importance, the WEF Nexus faces critical data challenges that hinder effective policymaking and sustainable resource management. Data gaps, inconsistencies, and a lack of standardized frameworks make it difficult for governments, researchers, and businesses to develop integrated solutions that balance the needs of people and the planet.

To bridge these gaps, the ONEPlanET project, funded by the European Union, is working to enhance data accessibility, interoperability, and usage within the WEF Nexus. By leveraging innovative tools and fostering cross-continental collaboration, ONEPlanET aims to strengthen decision-making processes that drive equitable and sustainable solutions across Africa and the EU.

Why This Webinar Matters
The WEF Nexus requires robust, data-driven strategies to support informed decision-making. Yet, across Africa and Europe, stakeholders often face:

  • Fragmented data systems that prevent efficient collaboration.
  • Limited access to high-quality, standardized data for policy planning.
  • A disconnect between local knowledge and global frameworks, affecting implementation.

To address these issues, the ONEPlanET webinar on March 5, 2025, will bring together policymakers, researchers, and sustainability advocates to explore:

  • Strategies to improve data accessibility and interoperability for better cross-sector collaboration.
  • How better data management can enhance decision making, policy development and the implementation of sustainable WEF Nexus solutions.
  • Tools for integrating social, economic, and climate considerations into policy design.
  • Best practices, collaborative frameworks and data driven methodologies for addressing complex WEF nexus challenges based on the three ONEPlanET case studies in the Songwe River Basin (Malawi/Tanzania), Inkomati-Usuthu area (South Africa), and the Niger River Basin (Nigeria).
